Checking and replacing the drum belt
Most dryer drums are turned by a motor-driven belt that wraps completely around the drum. The belt can
wear and sometimes break.
A worn belt will make a thumping noise while the dryer is running; a broken one will result in the drum
not turning at all. To check the belt, open the dryer door, reach in, and turn the drum by hand. If
you hear a slow thump that varies with the speed at which you turn the drum, the belt is responsible for
the noise. If the drum turns very easily, the belt is broken.
Replace a belt that is worn or broken. Unplug the dryer, then lift the top and remove the front panel to
provide space to remove the belt (see the service manual). Lift the drum slightly and slide the belt off
of it. Install the new belt so that its ribbed side is against the drum. Note: the new belt should be
the manufacturer's replacement. Another belt may cause the drum to turn at a speed for which the dryer
was not designed, resulting in poor tumbling action and causing vibration that may damage mechanical
parts.
The motor
The motor is located at the bottom of the cabinet and is usually mounted so that the motor shaft turns
the drum at one end and the blower at the other end. Before proceeding to repair the motor, unplug the
dryer. After gaining access to the motor, turn the motor pulley by hand. If the pulley cannot turn
without your applying force to it, the bearings need lubrication. Most dryer motors are permanently
lubricated by the manufacturer and do not include oil holes or ports.
