How refrigerators work

The refrigerator compressor circulates refrigerant though two sets of coils in one continuous loop. One set, the evaporator coils, cools the refrigerator; the other set, the condenser coils, is located under or in back of the refrigerator and gives off heat to the kitchen. The system works on the principle that a liquid (the refrigerant) absorbs heat cools the interior of the refrigerator) when it evaporates into a gas, then gives off this heat to the room when it is condensed.

The door gasket

A leaking door gasket will cause frost to collect on the evaporator plate, and extend refrigerator running time. On refrigerator doors that latch, test the gasket by placing a dollar bill between the gasket and the doorjamb and pulling on it. On refrigerator doors that latch magnetically, look at the gasket to be sure it touches the doorjamb at all points around the door. If a leak is apparent, first check the door for warping. If the door is warped, it is probably causing the leak.
