Charcoal filter

The manual I have said there should be a filter and shows it is located above the door. We have this unit for about 9 years and has worked fine. Never thought about the filter. So I ordered one and then proceed to change it as shown but this unit does not have a filter or a place for it. Please explain why there isnâ€™t a filter. Thanks
